Is SEO for Local Businesses doomed?

June 26th, 2011

It is now trite to see a flurry of SEO for local businesses occuring. The days are now long gone where local businesses didn’t rely on local internet marketing methods to grow and expand. Small businesses do consider it indeed one of the most effective ways to leverage the power of the web to generate new and expanded professional relationships. Savvy internet marketers now advise the use of social media marketing, local directory listing, and targeted online sales promotions to appeal to more customers. But do local businesses really possess the much-needed skills the use of these marketing tools requires? The reply is a definite ‘yes!’, and here is what the SEO world has in store for you, small companies owners.

Social media marketing plans usually center their efforts on the development of content that will draw interest and motivate visitors to talk about it in turn with their social networks. And there’s a cause to that. Local businesses owners, whichever trade they may be in, do completely know what tends to make their small business so special, what added value they can bring to a new customer. And even if they were not born an writer, be it with written or spoken ideas, in text, photos or movies, techniques and means to publish quality content on the world wide web now abound. Content that can be crawled by search engines robots who will hopefully take notice and help your enterprise progressively grow the ladder of the search engine’s results pages. But what’s the use, will you ask? And how much will SEO cost?

Well, internet access on smartphones is expanding at an exponential rate and what we can see occuring with the use of the mobile versions of Facebook, Twitter, Groupon, and Foursquare, is a growing trend towards relying on friends, relatives or even co-workers’ suggestions to decide how and when we should really spend our hard-earned money. We less and less rely on traditional media to tell us which movie we ought to watch, where we could have dinner or go shopping. Nothing really new here, in truth. We humans beings have often – if not constantly – asked our closest ones if they had any idea where we could find this unique type of present, if they had any tip on where we could get the best price on a piece of jewelery for a birthday present, and guess what? There are retailers and small businesses which do happen to have that incredibly special merchandise available. Unfortunately, these two barely ever meet. Rejoice, there’s now an inexpensive way to cross the gap and let them finally get together for a mutual advantage.

Sure, you guessed it, internet marketing is the way to go. And you, the local business owner, should really start ‘socializing on the internet’, starting with the use of a couple of simple Google SEO tools. Yes indeed, I would advise you first develop a simple Google Places space where you’ll begin telling web visitors what you’re up to, what your expertise is, why you began you enterprise, how others have already benefited from your solutions or merchandise. You should really also inform your visitors how much you’d really like them to spread the word about your enterprise.

But what if you don’t know where to go next as an online publisher?
